Bought a Game Right Before a Steam Sale? How Steam Refunds Work
Last updated: 2026-10-24T00:00:00.000Z
You paid full price, and the next day the game goes on sale. It happens to everyone. Fortunately, Steam has a refund policy that can save you money if you meet the conditions.
Steam’s basic refund rules
You can request a refund for any reason if both of these are true:
- It’s been less than 14 days since purchase
- You’ve played less than 2 hours
Request it from Steam Support by selecting the game from your purchase history. You can get the money back to your Steam Wallet or the original payment method.
Valve may decline refunds if it thinks the system is being abused. See Steam’s official refund policy for details.
What to do when the price drops
Steam doesn’t refund price differences. But if you meet the refund conditions, you can refund the game and buy it again at the sale price.
- Check that you’re within 14 days and under 2 hours
- Request a refund (refunds to Steam Wallet are often processed faster)
- Once it goes through, buy it again at the sale price
This won’t work if you’ve already played a lot or more than 14 days have passed.
Avoid buying right before a sale
- Know the sale calendar. The big Steam sales happen at about the same time every year (Steam sale schedule).
- Wishlist games so you get notified.
- Check price history to see how often and how low the price drops (how to read a historical low).
Using refunds to try games
The refund window is also handy for trying games without a demo: play for under two hours, and refund if it’s not for you. Just don’t overdo it, because repeated refunds may get declined.
Summary
- Steam lets you request a refund within 14 days and under 2 hours of play
- If the price drops, you can refund and rebuy
- Knowing the sale calendar and historical lows helps you avoid the problem in the first place
